Bridal shawl — Ayrshire whitework on handwoven Highland cloth
A handwoven and hand-embroidered bridal shawl, made in Crieff across the winter of 2026. One of a kind.
The ground cloth is woven in a soft plaid structure that holds light differently across its surface- areas of dense bouclé cloud against a quieter plain weave, so the fabric reads almost like weather moving across a hillside. The yarns are a mix of raw silk, eri silk, my own Caledonia Aran (a blend of Shetland lambswool, Ryeland, and alpaca, spun from named Highland fleeces), and a British wool bouclé. The hand is substantial but soft, with enough drape to settle over the shoulders rather than sit stiffly.
The embroidery is worked in the Ayrshire whitework tradition: a style developed in west-central Scotland in the early nineteenth century, originally on fine cotton for christening gowns and bridal veils. Here the motifs are translated into a single-flock Heatherlea Black Cheviot laceweight wool, which gives the florals a softer, more grounded quality than the original cotton work. Scalloped lace edging finishes the shawl.
Approx. 6 foot wide wingspan- please get in touch before purchase to confirm sizing and delivery for a specific wedding date.
